Eddie Would Go

It looks like the famed Eddie Aikau memorial big wave will get under way tomorrow at Waimea Bay on the north shore of Oahu. The contest has not been held since 2004 due to swell not being large enough for the tournament. If you aren’t familiar with the rules, the swell must be at least 25 feet for the contest to run, making this the preeminent big wave surfing contest during the year. Forecasts say that there is a possibility of 50 foot swells on tap for the contest.
In 2004, Bruce Irons pulled into the shore break risking life and limb to win the famed contest. Let me repeat, he pulled into the SHOREBREAK at Waimea Bay in 35 foot swell knowing what the outcome of that action would be. Good luck to all of the contestants tomorrow.
